When is the surf school?
The Emerald Isle Surf School is a group lesson running on
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from Memorial Day to
Labor Day during the approximate hours of 9 am to 11:30 am. Advance registration is required (252.354.8422).
The surf shop opens at 8:30 am and we should complete your registration by 9 am.
Where does the surf school actually take place?
The Surf School is conducted 100% on the beach!!! Students should complete their registration and check-in at
the surf shop by 8:45 am. The class will subsequently move to the Town’s historic eastern regional access for
the 9am to noon session, which is located less than a half mile away from the surf shop. The Eastern Regional
Access can accommodate over 200 automobiles, and has lavatories, showers, and other amenities – it’s also
located at one of the best surf breaks on the entire island of Bogue Banks. The access is located at the site
of the “old Emerald Isle Pier” that was destroyed in the 1990s and is now the future site of a concrete pier
that the N.C. Aquariums will be constructing. The estimated completion date of the new concrete pier is 2012.
If the surf conditions at the Eastern Regional Access are not conducive for the surf school, then other areas
Emerald Isle may be utilized.
Where is Emerald Isle Surf Shop located?
The shop is located near mile marker 15, at 3102 Emerald Drive
(Get driving directions). Emerald Drive is also known as
Hwy 58. Emerald Isle has a small, yet quaint business section on the east end of Town and this is where the
shop is located.
What is the cost? Are there any deposits?
The cost is $60 per student and we request a $20 deposit to ensure attendance and avoid overbooking.
There is a release form we also ask that you complete.
What is included in the Emerald Isle Surf School lesson?
Expert instruction by safety-certified teachers and all equipment including surfboards and leashes. We will
have umbrellas on the beach for shade and to escape the summer sun, and all students receive a great grab bag
with an assortment of stickers, lip balm, and other items, including a coupon entitling you to $20 off any new
surfboard and 10% off any full-priced clothing. Please note the items in the grab bag are subject to change.
What should I bring?
Be sure to bring sunscreen, a towel, a bottle or two of water and maybe something to snack on. School runs for
approximately 2 an 1/2 hours and any family or friends coming to watch may want to bring a chair and a camera.
Do you offer photographic services of the school?
Yes, we have a professional photographer available if you’re interested in individual photography of yourself at
the Surfing School. Please call for details.
What happens if it rains or the surf is flat, or the surf is too big?
These are all possibilities but we can usually operate 90% of the time. If there are no waves, then we can
always find a way to learn surfing – paddle races, relay races, surf etiquette, and techniques are all possible
activities we can address. There’s a lot to becoming a surfer and there is plenty to do and learn if the surf
is flat or too big. If there are thunderstorms/lightning in the area, then we may try to conduct the surf school
the following day. We pride ourselves on monitoring wave conditions and being flexible so you get the best surf
experience possible.
How long does it take to learn how to surf?
This will vary from person to person. Some will have an easier learning curve than others. Our teachers are
out there to ensure you have fun and learn to surf – we aim to give you the best possible surfing experience
regardless of your skill level. No worries – you’re surfing!!!
What ages do you teach?
In general, we like to see students that are 8 years and older; however we do make exceptions for younger
students provided they are extremely comfortable in the water and the parent/guardian approves of the child
attending the surf school. All students must be able to swim.
Do you offer private instruction?
Absolutely. Private instruction is available during non-surf school hours the entire week for $85 for the
first person and $65 for additional persons. Private instruction usually runs for about 2 hours. Just call
the shop or ask your teacher if you’re interested.
